Pakistan’s former limited-overs skipper Shahid Afridi, who withdrew his case from the Sindh High Court against the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on Wednesday, said in a press statement that he is going to appear before the PCB’s disciplinary committee on Thursday to answer various charges levelled against him.
Afridi, who had announced his retirement from international cricket in protest against PCB’s attitude, also hinted in his statement that he may return to the game after settling the issues with the board.
“I have withdrawn my petition filed before the Sindh High Court in Karachi against PCB as a first step to resolve the matter. As a true sportsman and cricketer, I believe that for the future progress, advancement and success of cricket in Pakistan it is necessary to strengthen the PCB as an institution.
“I have always served Pakistan and played cricket for my country and its people and the overwhelming love, honour and respect I have received in return is my biggest asset. I have all the zeal and energy to play cricket for the nation for many years to come. I will be appearing before the disciplinary committee onThursday Inshallah. I am especially thankful to all my well-wishers, the whole nation and the media for the support during this period. Thanks,” concluded Afridi.
Sources close to the PCB, however, said the Board was expecting a letter of apology from Afridi for his actions which triggered an ugly row in national cricket.
Afridi, of course, is eager to play for Hampshire in the T20 event and wants to save his contract with the English county. According to reports, Thursday is the last day for him to get the NOC for the same and if he fails to get it from the PCB, Hants will sign explosive West Indian player Chris Gayle in his place.
Afridi, appointed captain of Karachi Dolphins, will also be required to appear in the national T20 tournament starting in Faisalabad from June 24 in which top eight teams of the country will be vying for honours.
Sources said if Afridi tenders his apology to the PCB, he will get just a token punishment for his actions and will receive the NOC to play for Hampshire as well. But if he fails to do so, things may get more complicated in the coming days
